Born on 4 October 1931 in Kingston upon Thames, Terence Conran, then a young designer, opened the first Habitat store in 1964 in London. The Habitat brand was born out of frustration — the inability to sell his creations, rejected by the stores of the time — and a conviction that it was possible to offer the general public a clear improvement in their lifestyle. In the mid-1960s, tastes were changing, customs evolving, the first miniskirt was worn in London, and the new generation dreamt of furnishing their homes differently. With Habitat, Terence Conran revolutionised the world of interior decoration and was committed to making design accessible to as many people as possible. It was not unusual to cross paths with a member of the Beatles or even the royal family in the stores. The success was immediate and spread to France and across Europe a decade later. Habitat then arrived in Paris in 1973, at the foot of the Montparnasse Tower. For having popularised design in England, Terence Conran was knighted by the Queen in the 1980s and became Sir Terence Conran. While business life took him in new directions, he always remained very attached to the brand. In 2013, he inaugurated Habitat 1964, a vintage space at the Puces de Saint-Ouen flea market showcasing unique pieces and reissues of past collections — a way of immortalising our finest creations. Having left us on 12 September 2020, Sir Terence Conran left an indelible mark on our hearts and on those of decoration enthusiasts. We continue the ideology of our founder and commit to always bringing design, innovation and functionality to our customers.
After going through a period of transition, the Habitat brand was relaunched at the start of 2024 by the Vente-unique.com group, an expert in online furniture sales in France and Europe since 2006. This change is accompanied by both a desire to breathe new life into our rich heritage and to renew our commitment to excellence and accessible design.
Our dedication to innovation, quality and product durability remains stronger than ever. We continue to promote accessible and timeless design, respecting the original spirit of the brand. At Habitat, reinventing everyday life through creations that are both beautiful and functional remains our central mission, so that every home can reflect the best of contemporary design, and thus continue to write the story initiated by Sir Terence Conran.
Since its creation in 1964 by Sir Terence Conran, Habitat has distinguished itself by offering a range of timeless objects and furnishings accessible to all. Our collections, composed of functional, quality pieces, embody the spirit of a pop, joyful and bold design, making the Habitat brand an unmissable reference in the world of design.
The very essence of Habitat lies in its commitment to democratising interior design, offering innovative and inspiring collections that reflect boldness and modernity.
Making design accessible means for us enabling everyone to make contemporary-style pieces their own and enrich their everyday life through beauty, durability and quality. This is a deep conviction that Sir Terence Conran always carried with passion and determination, and which we commit to perpetuating to guarantee the lasting satisfaction of our customers.
